If you run a business in Vacaville, Fairfield, Dixon, Winters, or Davis, your Google Business Profile (GBP) is often the first thing a potential customer sees — before your website, before a review, before anything else. It shows up in Google Maps and in the local "map pack" results when someone searches for what you do nearby.
Here's a checklist of the fields that matter most, roughly in order of impact.
1. Primary category
Your primary category is the single biggest factor in which searches your profile shows up for. Pick the most specific category that matches your core business — "Italian Restaurant" beats "Restaurant," "Auto Body Shop" beats "Car Repair." You can add secondary categories too, but the primary one carries the most weight.
2. Business name (exactly as it appears in the real world)
Google's guidelines require your listed name to match your actual storefront/legal name — no keyword stuffing like "Vacaville Best Plumber - John's Plumbing." Profiles that violate this can get suspended, which removes you from search entirely until it's resolved.
3. Service area or address
If customers come to you, verify your address is exact. If you go to customers (mobile services, contractors, etc.), set a service area instead of a public address — this changes how you show up in the map pack.
4. Hours, including holiday hours
Incorrect hours are one of the most common reasons customers show up to a closed business — and one of the easiest things to fix. Set holiday hours in advance for anything outside your normal schedule.
5. Photos
A profile with no photos reads as unmaintained or possibly closed, especially next to competitors who have them. Add real photos: the storefront, the team, the work you do. Skip stock photos — customers can tell.
6. Products or services list
Use the Products or Services section to spell out what you offer in plain language. This gives Google more text to match against what people are actually searching for, beyond just your category.
7. Regularly answer questions and reviews
The Q&A section and review replies are public and searchable. Answering promptly signals an active business, and it's a chance to naturally mention services and neighborhoods in your own words.
8. Posts
GBP Posts (updates, offers, events) are free and show up directly on your profile. They don't carry huge ranking weight on their own, but they keep your profile active and give returning visitors a reason to check back.
None of these fixes require a new website or a marketing budget — most take an afternoon. If you'd like a second pair of eyes on your profile, or want a full look at how your business shows up online, I offer a free online presence audit for Vacaville-area businesses.
